چکیده

This paper proposes an approach to overcome some limitations of the 802.11e protocol highlighted in recent literature and improve the QoS support provided to realtime industrial traffic. The proposed solution does not change the IEEE 802.11e protocol, but introduces a technique to reduce the number of collisions and therefore to use the channel more efficiently for real-time traffic, especially when the traffic load is high and approaches saturation conditions. The proposed mechanism, called a Contention Window Adapter, dynamically changes the contention window size of the different Access Categories defined by the IEEE 802.11e protocol according to the wokload conditions of the wireless network. The paper describes the rationale behind the CWA mechanism, the algorithm itself and discusses the performance obtained through simulations run using ns-2.

Qos Support for Ieee 802.11 Wireless Lan∗

In today’s Internet, the emerging widespread use of real-time voice, audio, and video applications makes Quality of service (QoS) a key problem. Meanwhile, the Internet is getting heterogeneous due to the explosive evolution of wireless networks. QoS support in wireless networks is more challenging than in the wired networks since bandwidth is scarce, latency and bit error rate are high and cha...

P-HCCA: A New Scheme for Real-time Traffic with QoS in IEEE 802.11e Based Networks

Wireless Local Networks (WLANs) develops so fast that the ability of WLANs to support real-time multimedia communication with quality of service (QoS) assurance is doable nowadays and in the future. The IEEE 802.11e standard specification provides QoS facility support in the MAC Layer by Enhanced Distribution Channel Access (EDCA) which provides differentiated and distributed access to the wire...

Service Differentiation of IEEE 802.11e

The type of the applications for which Internet is being used has changed over the years. Multimedia applications, Real-time applications and Game playing require Quality of service. IEEE has proposed IEEE 802.11e, a quality of service extension to the wireless LAN standard IEEE 802.11. In this paper service differentiation ability of 802.11e is evaluated. Identical traffic is considered for al...

Implementation and Evaluation of IEEE 802.11e Wireless LAN in GloMoSim

IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is one of the most widely deployed wireless network technologies in the world today. The success of IEEE 802.11 mainly owes to its cost effectiveness, easy deployment and high data transmission rates. However, 802.11 MAC (Medium Access Control) algorithm is unable to support modern multimedia applications which require certain level of quality of s...

Performance Evaluation of Real-Time Application for EDCA Function in IEEE 802.11e WLAN

The IEEE 802.11 standard is a widely used base for wireless local area network (WLAN) infrastructure, because of its easy deployment. But it cannot provide QoS support for an increasing number of multimedia applications. With deployment of WLAN, the ability of the IEEE802.11 standard to support multimedia applications with high quality of service (QoS) requirements has increased. This paper eva...
